A bottle in a sea

On June 26, 2020, off the coast of the island of Ouessant, Ann Stouvenel and Marcel Dinahet launched a bottle into the sea from Dinahet’s boat, anchored near the Créac’h semaphore. Sheltered by the light of the eponymous lighthouse, the semaphore was reactivated a decade ago for artist residencies by the Finistère department. Since then, the island’s art center, Finis terrae, has invited artists from all walks of life to take time to reflect within this final building before America.

The exposed writings are sent out in the manner of poets from another time—one of slowness, hope, and selflessness. The entire set of posters is entrusted to the artists arriving for their residencies, one by one. Thus, the exposed writings, re-sent with a simple explanatory note and a return address, set sail and drift between two waters. They will then be able to travel—heading north or drifting into the Atlantic. Will they wash up on the Island of the Mariners in Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon? Will they cross paths with whales on the Saint Lawrence River heading toward Montreal? Will they veer toward the United States and its major cities? In this Homeric drift, will the journey itself become their true destination?

EX.PDF [EX.Portable Document Format] explores various forms of writing that have already been publicly presented, whether in an urban, editorial, or artistic context. In relation to contemporary practices, EX.PDF offers a collection of images compiled into a document folder. Published in 15 copies and closely tied to the principle of “Do It,” this project is designed to spark multiple exhibitions, initiated by various curators in different exhibition spaces.

Exponentially expanding, EX.PDF brings together over forty proposals – sketches, textual fragments, exhibition views, documentary photographs, redactions, etc. – each of which, in its own way, highlights, through various showings and contexts, the meaning effects of (re)exposed writings.

Exhibition Pauline Delwaulle

BRUME DE CAPELANS

du 30 septembre au 19 novembre 2023

Artist: Pauline Delwaulle

Galerie de Binic-Etables-sur-Mer
Une proposition de Finis terrae – Centre d’art insulaire, Ouessant & escales : Marcel Dinahet et Ann Stouvenel.

La brume de capelans is the name of a meteorological phenomenon that occurs in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon at the beginning of summer. The fog becomes so dense that one can barely see anything ahead. The city comes to a halt, and life is suspended by the mist.

This exhibition is the result of an artist residency on the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago in June 2022. Armed with her camera and camping gear, Pauline traversed the islands from end to end. From her encounter with this land, its history, and its inhabitants, numerous projects were born, which are now presented at the Binic-Etables-sur-Mer gallery.

Some of the works in the exhibition predate this journey. Pauline has worked on the slow transformations of the landscape, particularly the phenomena of coastal erosion.

FINIS TERRAE
Finis terrae - Centre d’art insulaire develops, in an unprecedented manner in France, artist-residencies based on the island of Ouessant. An annual residency program allows both French and international artists to stay at the Créac’h semaphore, a property and project of the Conseil Départemental du Finistère, with the goal of producing an artistic reflection or work connected to the context. Tailored expeditions also enable residency periods, public events, and collaborations on the Ponant Islands, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, and more broadly in maritime and coastal areas in Finistère and around the world. Finis terrae - Centre d’art insulaire, floating, Finistère-based and global, fosters movement, distance, and detachment, which are essential for the development of research and artistic practices, addressing issues related to the sea, isolation, landscape, insularity, and local culture.

Twin Islands

EXHIBITION SERIES: BREST, LISBON, 2022

Artists: Sara Bichão & Violaine Lochu
A proposal by Finis terrae – Centre d’art insulaire and vaga – espaço de arte e conhecimento.
As part of the France-Portugal Season: Following the artists’ residencies at the Créac’h semaphore in Ouessant and on São Miguel island in the Azores.
In partnership with *Passerelle – Centre d’art in Brest (France) and Carpintarias de São Lázaro – Centro Cultural in Lisbon (Portugal).

“TWIN ISLANDS”

*“It seems that even islands like to keep company.” [1]

Like castaways, Sara Bichão and Violaine Lochu spend time separately on two Atlantic islands, near European shores. The former, landed on Ouessant Island, discovers vernacular materials, local legends, the droit de brie [2], and isolation, staying in the watchroom of the Créac’h semaphore, which serves as her refuge. The latter has landed on São Miguel Island, in a context that is intrinsically different, where the swells and winds are milder, and the sea brings sounds from the depths.
Will they embark on a frantic march across these island spaces in the hope of finding each other, like Werner Herzog on the ice path [5]? Will signals come to them, carried by the currents? What duality, reciprocity, or shared experiences will arise from these journeys? A communication at a distance is thus initiated, awaiting their reunion.

T – Tic tac
W – Whale
I – Ignition
N – Necessary

I – Invert
S – Signal
L – Latitude
A – Antena
N – Noise?
D – Daboecia Azorica
S – Silence.

It is the environment that initially separates them but ultimately engulfs them. They are consumed, devoured by this giant, unpredictable organism—the maritime space—observed, traversed, and fantasized. From their islands, they look far off. With senses heightened, they search for each other, unable to remain still with their eyes fixed on the daily details. Instead, they face time stretching out, listen to the whales, converse with surrounding plants, familiarize themselves with nautical language, and explore spatialization above and below the horizon line.
As if caught by this time and space that seem to stretch endlessly before them, Violaine Lochu and Sara Bichão return with singular experiments and a collection of sounds, signs, and shapes which they transmit to us through marvelous objects. From silence emerge sculptures with raw forms and instinctive craftsmanship. This body of work produced by Sara is then activated by Violaine, who, through vocal and choreographic composition, transmits notes from the deep sea. By wearing the suit created from the Créac’h watchroom and carrying the writings of an oracle that reached us, this human delivers their dual reading of this lived experience.

Pendant de temps dehors

CYCLE OF SCREENINGS / ABER WRAC’H & CLICHY / 2021

pendant ce temps dehors
Artists / Marcel Dinahet, Nicolas Floc’h, Simon Giauchet, Fanny Gicquel, Angèle Manuali, Thomas Schmahl, Charlotte Audoynaud et Ludivine Zambon, Alice Delanghe et Fanny Gicquel, Philippe Roux et Eléonore Berrubé.
Curated by Fanny Gicquel et Alice Delanghe.

At the Aber Wrac’h in March and at Poush, artist workshops managed by Manifesto in Clichy (Paris), in June 2021.
As part of their residency, Fanny Gicquel and Alice Delanghe invite the trainees of the workshop to discover, during a screening, a selection of filmic works by contemporary artists, brought together under the title pendant ce temps dehors (“during this time outside”). These works explore the relationship between the body, the landscape, and natural elements. This relationship is approached in a poetic, meditative, sometimes absurd manner. This curatorial proposal will be presented during several events, from Aber Wrac’h to Paris and Saint-Briac.

10 ans de Finis terrae

MEETINGS, SCREENINGS, EXHIBITIONS, MEETINGS OF BOATS / OUESSANT / 2020

10 ans residencies to a sémaphore du Créac’h
The Finistère Departmental Council, owner of the site and creator of the artist residency project at the Créac’h Semaphore on Ouessant Island, has been providing this incredible resource to associations in Finistère for 10 years! 2020 marks an important milestone in the life of this demanding and exemplary project. The users of the program will celebrate this beautiful anniversary by recalling, with the locals, artists, and curious visitors, the creations and fruitful exchanges that have taken place on the island and beyond.

The Finis terrae association, dedicated to the visual arts, is organizing festive events including screenings, exhibitions, and encounters, in Saint-Briac in May and on Ouessant Island in June. From June 24 to 28, 2020, several locations on the island will be involved, including the Museum of Lighthouses and Beacons. Building on our encounters on the island since 2009 and previous events, we aim not only to present the works created but also to create a collaborative, research-based, and discovery-oriented time.

A proposal from Finis terrae.

ARTISTS
Marcel Dinahet, Nicolas Floc’h, Camille Goujon, Alexandre Ponomarev.

Founded in 2008, Finis terrae aims to promote the dissemination of video creation in peripheral locations outside the “art world.” On the island of Ouessant, the association develops two types of projects: a residency program allowing two artists per year to stay for one month at the Créac’h semaphore, and the biennial event Aller à Ouessant: Video on the Island, dedicated to presenting video and film works addressing issues related to the sea, landscape, and insularity.

This exhibition showcases works produced on Ouessant by the four artists who stayed on the island between 2008 and 2010. It is part of the current exhibition, as all four artists have a particular connection to Russia.

9 et 10 october 2010 association Finis terrae organised « Go to Ouessant : Vidéo on island #2 », A new edition of an event dedicated to video art and cinema. The program includes a selection of works by about twenty contemporary artists, the exclusive screening of short films by director Jean Epstein, the presentation of videos by art students, and the restitution of projects and reflections from the artist residency program organized by Finis terrae in 2009 and 2010.

Program

For one weekend, in the exceptional setting of the island of Ouessant, Finis terrae invites visitors to discover works by artists from various backgrounds who focus on maritime and insular environments. For “Aller à Ouessant: Vidéo sur l’île #2,” the “video art” section programming has been entrusted to two curators: on Saturday, October 9, Celia Crétien will present Navigation à vue, a forward-looking selection of works far removed from the romantic clichés usually associated with the sea, while Catherine Elwes—artist, critic, teacher, and curator based in London—will present Sea Fever, a program focusing on the connections between landscapes and moving images. Additionally, the public will be able to explore videos by artists invited by Ron Haselden and Marcel Dinahet. In the evening, two short films by Jean Epstein will be screened in partnership with the Cinémathèque de Bretagne. This exclusive screening dedicated to this avant-garde filmmaker, who marked the history of cinema in the first half of the 20th century, will offer an exploration of the theme of landscape from a cinematic perspective. Finally, special attention will be given to artistic experiences in insular environments. Sunday will be dedicated to the restitution of projects produced by Marcel Dinahet, Nicolas Floc’h, Camille Goujon, and Alexandre Ponomarev during their residency at Ouessant, along with the presentation of videos created by students from the Écoles des beaux-arts of Lorient and Quimper on the island of Groix in March 2010 as part of the workshop L’expérience du paysage.

SCREENINGS AND MEETINGS / OUESSANT / 2008

Go to Ouessant : vidéo sur l’île #1
Artists / Ivan Argote, Taysir Batniji, Julien Berthier, Anne Brodie, Jocelyn Cottencin, Tom Dale, Marcel Dinahet, Anne Durez, Nicolas Floc’h, Olwen Gaucher, Ron Haselden, Ange Leccia, Laurent Montaron, Eleonore de Montesquiou, Marylène Negro, Sophie Nys, Alexandre Ponomarev, Alessandro Piangiamore, Catherine Rannou.
A proposition by association Finis terrae : Célia Crétien & Marcel Dinahet
11 et 12 october 2008 / Ouessant, Finistère

Program

A selection of videos by contemporary artists will be screened at the Jean Epstein cinema. Various depictions of the sea will be presented, ranging from poetic and humorous to political; all are unique, original, and unprecedented. The artists featured include Breton, French, and British names, as well as international talents from Europe, Russia, Brazil, Lebanon, and more. Renowned video artists will be showcased alongside emerging ones. The focus is on recent, short-format videos that have rarely been shown before. After the screening, several of the featured artists will be invited to discuss their work and share their personal and artistic approaches to the sea.

CINÉ-CONCERT - FINIS TERRAE
An exceptional screening of Jean Epstein’s Finis Terrae (1929) will be accompanied by a pianist or a local musical group from Ouessant. A partnership will be established with a local musical association for this event. This will provide an opportunity to rewatch this pioneering film from a new perspective, or for younger generations, to discover it in a unique way.

CARTE BLANCHE À Tank.tv / As part of the festival, the London-based platform for young video creation, Tank.tv, will present a selection of videos by British artists, linked to the overarching theme of the event.

EXHIBITION
Several locations on Ouessant (museum, library, school, etc.) will host video installations by contemporary artists, always echoing the themes of the sea and light. For example, the film Disappearance at Sea (Cinemascope) by British artist Tacita Dean will be shown at the Musée des Phare et Balises, located in the former power station of the Créac’h lighthouse. This 1996 work, part of the Frac Bretagne collection, was shot in 16mm at dusk inside and outside the St Abb lighthouse in England. It focuses on the interplay of light inside and outside the lighthouse, creating a particularly fertile resonance with the museum’s collection. Video works by Beat Streuli and Nicolas Floc’h will also be presented.

VIDEO WORKSHOP
In collaboration with the association of art schools in Brittany, this workshop will take place during the week leading up to the festival and will bring together twelve students from four art schools in Brittany, as well as three students from the Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. The workshop will be led by Marcel Dinahet and a British teacher. The group will focus on topics related to the island’s context and the festival’s themes.
The videos produced during the workshop will be presented to the public during the festival weekend. Additionally, the Rennes-based association L’Oeil d’Oodaaq will showcase other student works from art schools that address themes related to the sea and insularity.
