*Semaphore Residency #6
A retreat residency, connected to the context of the Créac’h lighthouse on Ouessant.

APRIL AND DECEMBRE 2011
Ouessant

“I left… then… I came back… but I feel the urge to leave again,” “I was born on this rock, and I will die on this rock”—these are some of the words I gathered during walks, encounters, over coffee… Listening to these voices, to the silence, to the wind, to the sea, I left. Accompanied also by readings, films, music…

In collaboration with Ewen Chardronnet, we reactivated one of the semaphore’s functions through the radio project radio creac’h, radio la nuit, a series of five broadcasts, one of which was created and composed with students from the Collège des Îles du Ponant. We aired them live over a week, streaming on the internet. The broadcasts were composed from these voices, their recordings, the capture of the wind, the sea, maritime radio frequencies, as well as the readings and writings developed on the island.

(…) An island approached, questioned, summoned in my work. A non-geographical island. An island encountered in Thoreau’s play on the word island: I-land, the land of the self. A space of one’s own… a “proper” space… the desire, the necessity to define it, to grasp it. What inhabits it? What restricts it? How do we inhabit these vital spaces? And how do we root them—or how do we root ourselves, day after day, in a corner of the world?

“Proper” spaces that are not only physical but also mental…
