FinisTerrae - Ouessant - nomadic projects

Artists in residence are invited to stay with local residents, allowing them to forge strong ties with the community. The residency is based on the island experience, from walking to interacting with the flora and fauna, from observing the environment to meeting the inhabitants.

Artists come to this island space driven by a curiosity to find a context where humans and the elements are in constant contact. It is a space dedicated to taking a step back and gaining perspective. In 1928, Jean Epstein discovered Ouessant and set up his aesthetic and theoretical workshop there, which gave rise to the images in the film Finis terrae. The residencies organized by Finis terrae – Centre d’art insulaire have taken root in this land, to nurture reflection and creation in the field of contemporary art. The resident artists and theorists are alone in their creative work for a month. They come from other regions or countries. Their presence gives rise to a variety of relational approaches, addressing issues related to the sea, the coastline, the landscape, insularity, local culture, and more.
