Île aux Marins is a small island in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, located opposite the port of Saint-Pierre. The archipelago faces Ouessant across the Atlantic, south of the Canadian island of Newfoundland. The island once thrived thanks to cod fishing and now serves as a symbolic site, a testament to its unique heritage. Some of its houses are preserved by the Archipelago Heritage Preservation Association, a key partner in the project. One such house, the Maison Bleue, which is energy self-sufficient, hosts the invited artists.
The Finis Terrae team provides support by sharing the ethical and legal framework for this “transatlantic residency” and co-guides the artists. The project aligns with ongoing efforts to classify part of the local heritage. Partnerships play a vital role in fostering genuine collaboration, invigorating the local culture through the presence of contemporary artists. Each year, one or two artists are invited to spend a month on Île aux Marins (and possibly on Miquelon), engaging with the local environment and conducting research.
